For this assignment, I read Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, Ashlee Vance
1)
- What surprised you the most? What surprised me the most is how in depth they looked into the mind of Elon Musk. What surprised me is that he is considered slightly manic and not always completely put together like you would think such a successful person would be. I was also surprised at how openly he discussed dealing with stress and how he seems to not let it affect him too much.
- What about the entrepreneur did you most admire? I admire the way Elon Musk has such a strong passion to limit the amount of oil we use on Earth and how conscious he is of making our technology more sustainable to reduce environmental impact. He seems to be so determined and motivated to succeed in the things he wants and has never shown any signs of his motivation slipping. He incorporated old-school Silicon Valley and combined it with the modern Apple-like design in order to create something that would be both sustainable and appealing.
- What about the entrepreneur did you least admire? I don't like how Elon Musk seems to be arrogant. His passion and drive can come across as egotistical and he makes a lot of big promises that he might not always keep. His ideas seem to be a little too far fetched, and it makes me question his sanity a bit. He feels such a strong need to accomplish anything he thinks of that I don't know if he stops himself to consider if it is a good idea or not. He is too impulsive, but the impulsivity has attributed to his huge success.
- Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it? Elon Musk did encounter somewhat of a failure. He sold PayPal, and used the liquidity to start SpaceX. The startup forced him to go broke, and when he sold everything he had to live on couches. He scraped by until he was able to get a government contract and start Tesla.
3) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you. One part of the reading that was confusing for me was his talk about SpaceX. I don't really understand why he went into that business and was confused when they discussed it in the book. It seemed like a huge dream idea he made up in his head and decided to try it in real life. I was also confused about the interviewing process of the book and how they seemed to incorporate both interviews with non-fiction content.
4) If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why? I would ask Elon Musk how he stays confident and motivated and I would also ask him what he does in his free time when he's not focused on business.
5) For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion? Elon Musk would probably consider hard work both extremely important but also I feel that he likes to get things done as easily as possible. He works extremely hard himself, but he tends to accomplish things very quickly. If this is his opinion, I would share the same exact opinion.
Hey Lauren,
ReplyDeleteElon Musk is a very interesting entrepreneur and I plan on reading this book for one of the next reading reflections. Arrogance seems to be a reoccurring factor for these genius entrepreneurs, but as annoying as it can be it seems to work for them. Musk's need of helping the environment is very inspiring and I'm glad there are people with his knowledge wanting to make a difference for that cause. Great job!
Hey Lauren, nice job with this reflection. I really admire Elon Musk, and I actually think the reason he, as well as other geniuses, are arrogant is because they are confident. I have seen it before, and once you understand it, it stops being annoying and becomes admirable, at least in most cases. I hope he succeeds with his plans for our world, we need more people with his ideas and his drive. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteHey Lauren, I really enjoyed reading your reflection on Elon Musk. I have heard that he is very arrogant so I thought it was great that you were able to spot that and point it out. I also think he has a bit of issues with sanity as he basically was running Tesla into the ground and the board of directors had to kick him out. I think he is one of those great minds that wants to be able to change the world but as you mentioned I'm not sure if all of his ideas are good or even possible in the long run. I admire Musk for all he has accomplished and really would like to know what he does in his free time as well. Someone like that is so business minded that you have to wonder how they are able to kick back and relax.
ReplyDeleteHey Lauren,
ReplyDeleteI found it super interesting the subject is something that I would love to do future research on. I Really love your passion for this subject it is such a great idea. After reading your article it hooked me and makes me want to get more information about it. Combining the subject together is a great way to widen your audience and make the most use out of it. I think that with this blog entry you really covered a lot and did the right things.
Hello Lauren, I liked the book that you chose and I thought it was very Interesting. As everyone knows Elon musk is very intelligent and speaks about highly advanced topics. He is very Interested in the future and has developed technology that could potentially change the world forever. Its funny how you mentioned that he has been considered a maniac because of his thoughts and Ideas. I do agree with you, he does seem to be arrogant and a little too ahead of himself sometimes.
ReplyDeleteAmazing reflection Lauren! I too find Elon Musk fascinating even though there is still so much I don't know about him. I like how today's media is really putting an emphasis on entrepreneur visibility. I feel like business professionals weren't a big part of the media not that long ago. They were more background figures that you occasionally learned about in the newspaper or in school. I believe entrepreneur visibility is important because it lets us know what our most powerful industry leaders are getting up to and their stories can inspire future entrepreneurs as well. Once again great reflection Lauren!
